Honest Food Pyramid - it's upside down

I came across this upside down food pyramid and thought it was an excellent resource for a quick view of what leads us to Health and what leads us to Disease.  Read more about it on the FoodMatters website here.  In the meantime, I downloaded the new food guide for your viewing pleasure.  I hope you enjoy it.  - Damian

First Day of School

Everyone was excited for the first day of school.

Clara is in 3rd grade.  Her teacher is Mrs. Rabaduex.  Mrs Rabaduex is on maternity leave for another few weeks so she has a sub, Ms. Veasy.  Both teachers were at the meet and greet last week.

Ollie is in pre-k in the public school system.  He is there from 12:15-3:15pm everyday.  He eats lunch at school, which I send along with him in his new lunch bag.  His room is identified by bumblebees and his teacher's name is Mrs. Vargas.

They each have new backpacks and lunch bags.  For Ollie's backpack we sewed on a T-rex patch.  Clara picked out a dog patch.

Clara's end of the school day report was great.  She knew several kids in her class and had a good lunch experience with other kids who bring their lunches.

Ollie said he was shy at first and didn't like standing or walking in line.  But he had a good time and ate his lunch well.  Both kids seem to have very nice teachers.

Flower Girl

We were all delighted that our family could in some way contribute to cousin Christen's wedding on August 13.  Christen has always been a special cousin to us because we lived around each other and got to watch her grow up.  She was 6 when we got married and helped receive the gifts at our wedding.  She even stayed the night at our house once, just for fun (this was before we had our own children).

Clara was super excited about the event.  This was her second time being flower girl, so she knew a bit about what she would be doing, etc.  Her excitement grew exponentially when she learned she would have her hair done, ride in a limo to the reception AND get  to keep her beautiful dress.  She received a lovely sterling heart necklace to wear on the big day.  As soon as we got back to Texas I had to print pictures for her so she could make a scrapbook with the napkin and baby's breath she saved.  She wants to remember that day always.

I know that I am her mother so this next statement is slightly biased, but she looked absolutely GORGEOUS!!  She nearly took my breath away.  She wasn't, of course, wasn't the only one who looked good, besides the bride.  Grandma Helmer was all done up in a sparkly top and Doreen (mother of the bride) was stunning!

August Birthday Party in Kansas

We headed to Kansas (minus Damian) for Damian's cousin Christen's wedding.  Clara was to be the flower girl and it was convenient that it fell so close to birthday time.  We celebrated Izzy's birthday as well.

The cousins had fun playing outside ( 100 degree weather), shopping at Alco, doing crafts, and of course, dressng up.

Clara, Oliver and Isabel LOVED spending time with their grandparents, especially when it was a one-on-one situation.  They really did cherish every moment of that time.

Swim Party...kind of

At school's end, Clara handed out several invitations for her birthday.  I had no contacts for these kids and it seemed like the only way if she wanted to invite anyone.  Some of the children invited live in our apartments.  Yet, none of these children showed up.  Luckily, earlier that week we met a nice little girl and her grandma that were visiting family in our apartments.  Clara and Mara (she'll be 8 in Oct.) really got along well playing at the pool together.  I decided it would be a good idea to invite them for Saturday and they came.  They had a good time.

Eight!

It's been hard for us to believe that Clara is 8 and going into 3rd grade already.  We celebrated her birthday on Aug 6 and 7.

We began our day with making a sea turtle cake.  Everyone wanted to help.  Homemade everything except for the colored icing in tubes for the designs.  We all enjoyed the cake and took the rest to church on Sunday for potluck.

Clara decided earlier that she was ready to have her ears pierced and that this might be a good birthday activity.  We went to Claire's in the mall and let her pick out the earrings she wanted.  Knowing she was about to be the flower girl in cousin Christen's wedding, she picked out some pretty little CZ 14k gold studs.  She also picked out a shell bracelet for fun.  We gave her some small 14k gold hoops for when she is able to change her earrings.
